Research Paper Conclusion Writing Workshop
Beyond Summarising Your Findings: Writing Conclusions That Make an Impact
Join us online for an interactive writing workshop, open to participants worldwide, combining practical exercises, small-group discussions and personalised feedback. Organised by SPACE Studies.
A strong research paper conclusion does more than summarise findings. It brings together the central arguments of a study, communicates their significance and demonstrates how the research contributes to a wider field of knowledge.
Yet writing an effective conclusion can be challenging. How can you synthesise complex findings without repeating the discussion? How do you communicate the contribution of your research without overstating its importance? And how can you end your paper with a clear, convincing message?
This practical workshop explores the principles of effective conclusion writing through guided analysis, individual writing exercises, peer discussion and constructive feedback. Rather than focusing exclusively on theoretical guidance, participants will apply what they learn, evaluate different approaches and develop their academic writing skills collaboratively.
What Will You Learn?
- Distinguish between summarising findings and synthesising research contributions.
- Identify the essential elements of an effective research paper conclusion.
- Communicate the significance and implications of research clearly and convincingly.
- Address research limitations without undermining the value of the study.
- Avoid repetition, unsupported claims and overly broad statements.
- Develop a coherent conclusion that leaves readers with a clear understanding of the research contribution.
Workshop Structure
Part 1 — Understanding Effective Research Conclusions
An introductory presentation examining the purpose, structure and essential components of a strong conclusion, common writing challenges and ways of communicating wider research significance.
Part 2 — Critical Reading and Revision
Participants examine a sample research conclusion, identify strengths and weaknesses, and explore ways to improve clarity, structure and effectiveness through guided discussion.
Part 3 — Writing, Peer Feedback and Revision
Participants receive a fictional research case study with a research question, methodology, key findings and limitations. Each participant drafts an original conclusion, exchanges feedback in a small group, revises their writing and shares the revised version for guided discussion and facilitator feedback. The number and length of plenary readings will depend on group size and available time.
Part 4 — Reflection and Questions
Discussion of key lessons, practical strategies and questions about applying these approaches to participants’ own academic writing.
Who Can Attend?
- Master’s and doctoral students, early-career academics, researchers and more experienced scholars seeking to strengthen or reflect on their academic writing. No completed research paper or existing findings are required; all practical exercises use fictional research case studies provided during the workshop. Participants from different disciplines are welcome.
